What is Matcha

What is Matcha

Matcha is a finely stone-milled green tea powder made from shade-grown tea leaves.

Unlike traditional tea, where leaves are steeped and discarded, matcha allows you to consume the entire leaf. This results in a deeper flavor, vibrant color, and a naturally sustained source of energy.

For centuries, matcha has been enjoyed in Japan as part of tea ceremonies that emphasize presence, balance, and appreciation of simple moments.

Today, the ritual continues in homes around the world.

How Matcha is Made

The process of producing ichibancha matcha is both delicate and time-intensive.

Tea plants are shaded several weeks before harvest, increasing chlorophyll levels and developing the rich green color associated with high-quality matcha.

After harvest:

• Leaves are carefully steamed to preserve freshness
• Stems and veins are removed
• The leaves are slowly stone-milled into an ultra-fine powder

This traditional milling process preserves the delicate flavor and texture that defines ceremonial matcha.

Flavor and Quality

High-quality ichibancha matcha is known for its balance of sweetness, umami depth, and smooth texture.

You may notice:

• A naturally creamy mouthfeel
• Subtle vegetal sweetness
• A vibrant, bright green color

Lower-quality matcha often appears dull in color and tastes bitter or astringent.

The difference comes from cultivation, harvest timing, and careful milling.

Preparing Matcha

Preparing matcha is simple and calming.

1. Add 1–2 grams of matcha to a bowl
2. Pour 60–70 ml of warm water (not boiling)
3. Whisk briskly in a “W” motion until frothy
4. Enjoy immediately

With practice, the preparation becomes a quiet daily ritual.

Matcha and Focus

Matcha naturally contains L-theanine, an amino acid known for promoting calm focus.

Combined with natural caffeine from the tea leaf, matcha provides sustained energy without the sharp spikes often associated with coffee.

This balance is one reason matcha has been appreciated for centuries by monks, artists, and scholars.
